Street Sweeping
The City sweeps its streets year-round, pausing only when winter weather sets in.
Why We Sweep (Benefits)
- Prevents stormwater pollution. Sweeping removes dirt, debris, and leaves before they wash into storm drains that flow to our lake and river, and reduces localized flooding from blocked drains.
- Improves air quality by removing fine dust and particulates from roadways.
- Increases traffic safety by clearing debris that can be hazardous to drivers and cyclists.
How Often We Sweep
- Residential streets: swept an average of 4-6 times per year.
- Major streets (arterials, collectors): swept twice monthly.
- Note: scheduling specific streets on specific days isn't feasible at this time.
How You Can Help
- Do not put sod, garden or wood waste, limbs, or branches in the street.
- Move parked cars if you hear the sweeper in your neighborhood.
- Trim low-hanging branches and limbs from curbside trees and shrubs so the sweeper can clean as close to the curb as possible.
Street sweepers sit higher than cars and trucks. Trimming low branches to a minimum 13'6" helps prevent costly damage to mirrors, antennas, and strobe lights — and keeps crews on the road.
