City Opportunities

The City of Coeur d’Alene is seeking one (1) commissioner to serve on the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have an interest in the future growth and development of Coeur d’Alene, community visioning, livability, planning and zoning issues, and the public process.

All members of the Commission must have continuously resided in Kootenai County for at least two (2) years prior to their appointment.  The members of the Commission must be residents of the City during their term of office; however, three (3) members may be nonresidents living within Kootenai County if they are employed within the city limits of Coeur d’Alene.

Role of the Commission:

The Planning and Zoning Commission seeks to promote orderly growth, preserve the quality of Coeur d’Alene, protect the environment, promote economic prosperity, protect property rights, and foster the safety of its residents.  Additionally, the Commission promotes the public interest by helping citizens understand the planning process and providing opportunities for public comment.

The Planning and Zoning Commission meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Library Community Room.  Occasionally, the Commission may hold a second meeting on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m.  There are additional workshops that may take place during the day (generally at noon) or in the evening for special projects, such as the comprehensive plan update or a code amendment, that require more discussion with staff, City Council, or another commission.  The Planning and Zoning Commission also serves as the Development Impact Fee Advisory Committee. Meetings last a minimum of one hour and frequently last up to three hours. Faithful attendance is very important, but occasional absences will be excused.

All meetings are open to the public and publicized to allow and promote public participation in the decisions of the Commission.

Duties of the Commission:

  • To recommend and make suggestions to the City Council for the adoption of coordinated plans for the physical development of the City.
  • To recommend the boundaries of zoning districts and appropriate regulations to be enforced therein, make reports, hold public hearings and perform all other duties as may be prescribed by the Idaho Code and the City Code.
  • To comply with Idaho Code for responsibilities as the Development Impact Fee Advisory Committee.
  • To comply with all City policies, procedures, and regulations. 

Duties of Commissioners:

  • To regularly attend all scheduled meetings of the Planning and Zoning Commission as well as special or called meetings relevant to the office.
  • To prepare for each meeting.
  • To create a positive environment in meetings of the Commission.
  • To maintain an attitude of courtesy and consideration toward colleagues, citizens, and staff during all discussions and deliberations.
  • To respect all local, state and federal laws, rules and other regulations.

Commission Terms:

Commission appointments are six-year terms. The term of this Commission seat will end on May 1, 2029 or until a successor is appointed and qualified, as it is filling a vacancy for a partial term.

PLEASE NOTE: * Members of the commission will be selected without respect to political affiliations and shall serve without compensation. New Commissioners will be provided with more extensive information on their duties and training once appointed.

The City of Coeur d’Alene is accepting applications for an upcoming vacancy for a representative on the Library Board of Trustees. 

Members of the Board are appointed by the Mayor and Council and serve for a 5-year term.  The Board consists of five (5) members who receive no salary.

The City of Coeur d’Alene is seeking members for the Personnel Appeals Board to fill one vacancy. The Board consists of a panel of six (6) members to be appointed for a four-year staggered term appointed by the Mayor with the concurrence of the City Council. Members of the Board shall be residents of the City. No person shall be appointed to the panel who holds any salaried office or employment with the City. Application period will remain open until the position is filled.

The Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee is seeking members to fill three vacancies. The current committee opening requires the applicant to be a member of the retired community, water access, and School District 271 or a member of the legal community. Application period will remain open until the positions are filled.

The City of Coeur d'Alene is seeking applicants for two vacancies in the Urban Forestry Committee. Application period will remain open until the position is filled.
