Captain Nelson

Captain Brett Nelson is a 34-year Law Enforcement veteran who retired from the Santa Ana Police Department in 2020 before relocating with his family to North Idaho.  Captain Nelson was hired by the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office in 2020 as a Deputy Sheriff assigned to the Jail and then Patrol before being appointed the Undersheriff where he served until August of 2026. 

Captain Nelson comes from a family of public servants.  His wife retired after 22 years of service and both his father and uncle retired respectively after 30 year law enforcement careers.  Captain Nelson is proud to serve the men and women of the Coeur d’Alene Police Department and the citizens of Coeur d’Alene.
