Public Art "The Suffragist"

"The Suffragist"
Artist:  Terry Lee
Location:  6th & Front Avenue, McEuen Park

"The Suffragist," created by local artist Terry Lee, was dedicated on August 18, 2020, in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Women's Right to Vote.   Jennifer Drake, Arts Commission Chairman, made the following comments at the dedication ceremony:

"[T]his project has been years in the making.  As soon as the Idaho Farmer joined the American Worker, taking it from a stand-alone piece to a series, the Arts Commission committed itself to making sure that at some point, a women would also join them.  As the hundredth anniversary of women's right to vote approached, the idea arose that our woman should be a suffragist.  And while the Arts Commission supported the project every step of the way, the real work was done by many others.  Not just the design and creation by the amazingly talented Terry Lee, but by a group of local women who took it upon themselves to drive the project forward and take on the vast majority of the fundraising.  I'l like to share with you a very brief glimpse of the work they did, in the words of another of the project's advocates, Nancy White:

'I'm envisioning that 100 years ago it was predominantly the tireless efforts of a handful of dedicated individuals that ultimately secured the right to vote for all women.  So it again is true today with this project, that a small group of dynamic local leaders came together to inspire the statue's theme, as well as embark on a total grassroots fundraising effort.  This project might never have been completed without the enthusiasm and efforts of a small group of amazing women.  Individual recognition must be given to Mary Lou Reed, Teri Farr, Ruth Pratt, Mary Sanderson, and Roberta Larsen.  This project was their baby from the start, and they persevered, seeing it through to a successful and timely completion.'

So now, on the hundreth anniversary of this defining moment in our nation's history, we get to celebrate a statue that will stand strong for the next hundred years and beyond. . . .Your support of The Suffragist has given the people of Coeur d'Alene an incredible gift that speaks to our shared history, our sacrifices, and our resilience.  May she always stand as a reminder of past battles that were fought with ceaseless determination and won with courage; a reminder that remains as necessary today as it was then."

The Suffragist is located next to the extremely popular "American Worker," "Idaho Farmer," and "Idaho Lumberjack" statues, also created by artist Terry Lee.
