Statement of Mayor Woody McEvers and City Council

June 30, 2025

It is with profound grief that Mayor McEvers and the Coeur d’Alene City Council acknowledge the death of Coeur d’Alene Fire Department Battalion Chief John Morrison at the hands of the active shooter on Canfield Mountain yesterday, June 29, 2025. In addition, Coeur d’Alene Engineer David Tysdal sustained multiple gunshot injuries and is currently hospitalized. We are praying for his recovery. We extend our deepest sympathies to Kootenai County Fire and Rescue for their loss of Battalion Chief Frank Harwood.

All these men were heroic in their duties as they put their lives on the line to protect and serve others. In the coming days we will honor them properly for their sacrifice to the city they serve.

As City leaders we wrap our arms around our first responders and their families in this time of deep sorrow. We ask our community to continue to do the same. #
