Water Source Protection and Conservation Tips for Summer Use

Clean water is a very precious resource and as a community we all need to do our part to protect and conserve this resource for future generations to enjoy.  We are very fortunate to pump our water from the Spokane Valley Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer, one of the most pristine and abundant resources in the world.  Nearly 600,000 consumers are currently supplied by this source, stretching across northern Idaho and eastern Washington.  The City of Coeur d’Alene is a founding member of the Idaho Washington Aquifer Collaborative (www.iwac.org) which promotes the protection of water quality with numerous videos and website links for consumer education.  The City is also promoting consumer awareness with the 10 Important Tips for Saving Water.  Irrigation systems use the largest amount of water in the summer.  Two-thirds of water consumption during the summer is due to irrigation, and most systems are only 30% to 40% efficient.  This means that two-thirds of water from the average irrigation system is wasted due to wind drift, runoff on sloped yards, improper spray patterns, and lack of system maintenance.
