City Announces Fire Department Leadership Transition

City of Coeur d’Alene Mayor Dan Gookin announces the upcoming retirement of Fire Chief Tom Greif, who will conclude nearly 29 years of dedicated and distinguished service to our community on April 16, 2026. Mayor Gookin stated, “throughout his career, Chief Greif has exemplified exceptional leadership, commitment, and professionalism, leaving a lasting and meaningful impact on the Fire Department and the community he has faithfully served. We extend our sincere gratitude and congratulations to Chief Greif as he enters retirement.”

Effective April 17, 2026, Deputy Fire Chief Bill Deruyter will assume the role of Interim Fire Chief, ensuring continuity of leadership and operations until the new Fire Chief officially begins.

The City is also pleased to announce that Jon Fugitt has accepted the position of Fire Chief and is expected to begin his tenure in early to mid-May.

Mayor Gookin added, “the City appreciates the dedication of its Fire Department leadership and remains committed to maintaining the high level of service our residents expect and deserve.” #
