The City of Coeur d’Alene is pleased to announce three finalists in the selection process for the next Fire Chief of the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department. After narrowing down the total applicant pool of thirty-four (34) applicants to nine (9) for initial interviews, interviews were held Friday, March 13, 2026.  The selection committee agreed to move three finalists on to in-person interviews scheduled for Thursday, March 5, 2026.  The finalists were selected for their work experience, professional accomplishments, and commitment to community service.

The finalists are:

  • Jake Bieker, currently an internal applicant with the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department serving as Fire Captain. Jake Bieker began his career with the City of Coeur d’Alene and brings more than 23 years of fire service experience.
  • Jon Fugitt, Deputy Chief with Fullerton Fire Department in California. Deputy Chief Fuggit has 25 years of experience advancing through the ranks from Firefighter to Deputy Chief.
  • Kristan Maurer, most recently served as the Clark County Fire District 6 Fire Chief in Washington. Maurer has 25 years of fire service experience.

The finalists will participate in a series of interview panels on March 5 and feedback gathered during these sessions will play an important role in the final selection process.

Interim City Administrator Ron Jacobson stated, “Each of these candidates bring a great amount of fire experience and a deep commitment to public safety.”  The next Fire Chief will succeed Chief Grief, who is retiring on April 16 after nearly thirty years of dedicated service to the community. #
