Fire Chief Tom Greif Announces Retirement

After nearly three decades of distinguished service in the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department, Fire Chief Tom Greif announced his plans to retire in April 2026. Chief Greif, who was promoted to Fire Chief in 2022, has been a steadfast leader and public servant, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, resilience, and community impact.

Chief Greif began his career with the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department in 1997, steadily rising through the ranks, thanks to his professionalism, extensive experience with the EMS system, and deep commitment to public safety. His promotion to Fire Chief marked a new chapter in his career, during which he has led the department through critical upgrades in equipment, an updated 5-year master plan, and strong partnerships with surrounding agencies that continue to benefit the department and the City of Coeur d’Alene.

Chief Greif said “Serving the City of Coeur d’Alene for 28 years and Kootenai County for the past 33 years has been the honor of a lifetime. I’ve been surrounded by some of the most amazing and dedicated professionals that a community could ever wish for. As I prepare to begin a new chapter on April 17th, 2026, I do so with immense pride! This community will always be my home, and I’ll forever be proud to have worn the badge here.”

Mayor Woody McEvers commended Chief Greif’s leadership and stated “On behalf of the City of Coeur d’Alene, I want to express our deepest gratitude to Chief Greif for his many years of dedicated service. His leadership has strengthened our fire department, enhanced public-safety in our community, and set a standard of excellence for all of us to follow. As he embarks on this next chapter, we wish him the very best and know he leaves behind a department well-positioned for continued success.”
