The Inland Northwest Hall of Fame, Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m., at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, will feature the first three presidents at North Idaho College. The program is by regional historian Robert Singletary, Programming and Marketing Director for the Museum of North Idaho, the library’s community partner for the series. Profiles will include those for: * Moritz A Brakemeyer, founder and first president, 1933-35. During his administration the college was a private institution named Coeur d’Alene Junior College. * Orrin Lee took over as president in 1936. Under his leadership the college became a tax supported college in 1939 with the name of North Idaho Junior College. * When Lee resigned in 1944 to join the Navy, George Kildow, a respected public school administrator became president. At that time the struggling college had less than 30 students, five full-time faculty and a bare bones curriculum. When Kildow died of a heart attack in 1962 the enrollment at NIJC was over 500 students with 26 faculty members and a comprehensive academic and vocational curriculum, plus a new campus on the old Fort Sherman grounds with several college owned buildings. The final program in the current series will be held one week earlier than normal – on Nov. 17 – due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Patrons who need accommodation to participate in library programs or services are asked to contact the staff prior to the activity by calling 208-769-2315.
