Q: Are you aware that a majority of storm drains in Coeur d’Alene connect directly to Lake Coeur d’Alene or the Spokane River?

Stormwater facts

  • Stormwater occurs when precipitation flows over the ground. Surfaces like driveways, sidewalks, and streets prevent stormwater from naturally soaking into the ground.
  • Stormwater can pick up debris, chemicals, dirt, and other pollutants as it flows into a storm drainage system.
  • Grass swales offer limited treatment as the water infiltrates into the ground.
  • Stormwater that enters a hard pipe system may be directly discharged untreated into Lake Coeur d’Alene or the Spokane River.
