For the 29th consecutive year, local residents gathered to bag seedlings to share with local 4th grade students in observance of Earth Day. About 60 volunteers working in 8 to 10 assembly lines bagged and tagged nearly 3,000 seedlings on Monday morning.

“We have now given away over 65,000 trees to local 4th graders since 1987,” said John Schwandt of the city’s urban renewal committee. “Although the program is run entirely by vo...lunteers donating their time—absolutely zero overhead costs—total costs for trees and buttons is nearly $2,400.”

The program has expanded over the past 20 years and now includes an art contest for middle and high schools to design a commemorative button that accompanies each tree.
