City of Coeur d'Alene Sewer Pipe Rehabilitation Work Deemed Essential and Will Begin on April 15

In an ongoing effort to improve the public sewer system’s reliability and functionality, the City of Coeur d’Alene’s Wastewater Utility annually rehabilitates or replaces its aging and deteriorated public sewer infrastructure. Last spring, the City discovered and scheduled approximately 1.3 miles of sewer pipes for Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) Rehabilitation and awarded the project on October 16, 2019. CIPP is a trenchless technology that installs a seamless fiberglass pipe inside an existing pipe without excavation.

Especially in these unprecedented times, the Wastewater Utility’s top priority remains to be the safety, health and well-being of our community. In light of this priority and to ensure proper collection and treatment of nearly 6.0 million gallons of sewer flow per day (MGD), the City has deemed these wastewater projects as essential.

Beginning April 15, 2020, contractors will be cleaning and lining public sewer mains using a CIPP method. All existing sewer lateral connections are temporarily blocked and reinstated within the same day. The installation process takes several hours instead of weeks as with excavation projects; thus, minimizing construction impacts to area residents and businesses. Work is scheduled to take place between 7am-10pm, Monday through Friday and possibly during some weekends and/or holidays. This project is anticipated to be completed by May 21, 2020.

Contractors will be providing door hanger notifications to all affected residents and businesses 48 hours and 24 hours prior to commencing construction activity. After being notified, the City is asking all affected residents and businesses to reduce their daytime sewage discharge as much as possible. At the end of that working day, normal sewage discharge may resume. All residents are also encouraged to pour water down interior floor drains and low/unused plumbing fixtures. This should minimize odors entering into homes and businesses.

All work will be confined to publicly owned property and the right of way. There may be minor, periodic interruptions to traffic flow within the neighborhood; flaggers and detour routes will redirect any disruptions to local traffic. We apologize in advance for this inconvenience.
