Public Art Out of the Smoke

"Out of the Smoke"
Artist: Heidi Wastweet
Location: Fire Station No. 3

Commissioned in 2002 for Fire Station No. 3, 1500 N. 15th Street. The Coeur d'Alene Arts Commission issued a Call to Artists for a piece of art that would become a focal point and enhance the new fire station. It was envisioned that the art work would reflect the relationship between the Fire Department and the community they serve, draw public attention to the new facility, and establish a model for the use of art in future public projects within the city. The art piece consists of an oak layered wooden door with a bronze bas-relief sculpture mounted into the front, serving as the main public entrance to the building. The relief sculpture shows a fireman in action emerging from smoke and flames with a fireman's tribute verse in the smoke behind the fireman. A unique custom fabricated pull handle and matching push plate, designed around the shape of the State of Idaho, are made from powder-coated steel.
