1501 E. Lakeshore Drive, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
In 1917 when the riverboats still plied the waters of Lake Coeur d'Alene, a stately house was built on the eastern shore amidst towering pines. The Edward Rutledge Timber Company built the home for its manager, Huntington Taylor, and his family.
In the early 1930's, Rutledge Timber merged with Potlatch Forest and Frederich Jewett became chairman of the board. For
several years the Jewett family used the spacious house as their private residence.
In 1940 the house became a staff house used for entertaining company officials and international guests. It was used
as such until 1972.
In June of 1978, Potlatch Forest granted the historic Jewett House to the city of Coeur d'Alene and it's Senior Citizens. At which time it became a social and recreational center for seniors.
The Jewett House Facilities
This elegant three-story house is nestled against a pine-covered hillside at the end of Lakeshore Drive. The grounds are
beautifully landscaped with flowerbeds, grape arbor, shrubs and shade trees of many varieties.
The spacious lawns are perfect for games, strolling or picnicking, including a large covered barbecue grill which has been permanently installed on the front lawn. All of this against a backdrop of spectacular lake and mountain views.
There is an elevator lift at the end of the front porch for those unable to use the steps.
Upon entering the house, an open stairway graces the front entry which divides the living and dining rooms. Both of these rooms have large picture windows that frame die shimmering lake circled by forested mountains, thus giving visual pleasure for all seasons.
The large beamed living room has a lovely fireplace and built-in bookcases to add to its comfort. It is furnished with a
piano, organ, PA system, and TV, depending on your meeting's needs.
A delightfully furnished sun parlor is just off the living room. It has a door giving access to the front porch, which is a perfect place to sit and relax.
A butler's pantry is just off the dining room, making it convenient for serving potlucks or light refreshments.
In the basement is a large poolroom with one table.
The decor is turn of the century.
